Through it all, most of Galveston County’s cities are defying the odds amidst COVID-19. Despite a statewide trend downwards, sales tax receipts show an increase in gross receipts during the month of April.

This is a testament to our citizens continuing to shop local and supporting our businesses.

Despite dire predictions about the effects of COVID-19 restrictions, sales tax revenue in most county cities was actually up in April over last year’s numbers. Cities that rely heavily on tourism saw predicted drops in tax revenue, however.

Even in cities where sales tax revenue fell, collections tended to be better than predicted — and officials predicted even higher numbers for May.
