The COVID pandemic is fueling a coastal real estate boom, despite the occasional — or even somewhat regular — hurricane and tropical storm.

Sales of homes on the historic East End of Galveston were up 32 percent from June through September, compared with the same period last year, according to data from the Houston Association of Realtors. Sales of beach and bay homes in the West End were up 66 percent during the same four months.

Galveston’s growth has far outpaced growth in Houston, where year-over-year sales were up 17 percent over the past four months.
