California-based KB Home recently added about 1,600 lots for new homes around town, expanding its portfolio where it builds to 35 Houston-area communities.

Brett Dietz, KB Home’s new Houston division president, told the Houston Business Journal last November he wanted to see the national homebuilder rank among the top three in Houston for home closings and wants to expand the number of communities KB Home builds in from 25 to 45 within the next three years. 

KB Home ranked fourth among homebuilders with 1,181 closings for the 12-month period ending March 31, Metrostudy data showed. In November 2018, the builder ranked eighth. 

Growth could be “virtually in any area,” Dietz told HBJ last November. The 1,600 new lots will include a mix of new and existing communities in Katy, Rosenberg, Atascocita, Missouri City and La Marque, an announcement stated. 

An average KB Home is about 2,200 square feet in size and the builder focuses on lot sizes between 30- and 40-feet wide, HBJ previously reported. Its latest community, Cypress Creek Landing, has homes starting in the mid-$180,000s, according to the announcement. 

Demand for affordable homes continues to rise as builders say it’s become more challenging to keep costs down in new home construction. Last year, the $200,000-$249,000 price point saw a 33.4 percent jump in new home starts, about three times the gains seen in the market as a whole, Metrostudy data showed.
